Shiplake Tennis Club
Shiplake Tennis Club has been in existence since 1929. However, playing activities were suspended during the first world war and the club declined over the following years due to the poor state of the original grass courts. Thankfully, it was revived in 1969 by a group of enthusiastic local tennis players, who as a result of fund raising, converted the grass courts into hard courts in 1971. Since this time the club has steadily grown to the thriving membership we now enjoy today. The club is full to capacity at just over 350 members, a staggering 150 of which are juniors.
The club is proud to have a particularly strong junior membership. Coaching starts from 5 years up and the club struggles to keep up with demand, the past few years seeing a waiting list for new juniors. Recently, in partnership with Shiplake College coaching for teenagers has now been offered using their floodlit courts during the week. This enables, for the first time, year round coaching for all junior members. Due to the high quality of coaching our juniors regularly compete in Oxfordshire LTA events and, over the past few years, have taken part in the finals of mini events.
