PROPOSED NEW ‘NORTH READING ORBITAL’ ROAD – IN SOUTH OXFORDSHIRE

In its latest transport consultation, Reading Borough Council is proposing a new ‘North Reading Orbital’ road that would run through South Oxfordshire. It would start on the A4074 somewhere near Cane End, then run past Kidmore End, Chalkhouse Green and Emmer Green before joining a proposed new bridge across the Thames near Playhatch, where it would connect to the M4 via the A329(M). There would be ‘Park & Ride’ sites near Cane End, Emmer Green and Playhatch. I would be very interested to hear residents’ thoughts before I respond to this proposal. I am totally against this. I feel exactly the same as the previous poster. Tearing up the countryside and our wonderful areas of natural beauty to build more roads is not the answer. It simply encourages more cars and as said will immediately encourage urban sprawl. People need to cut down on their use of cars and lessen their reliance on them. We need better public transport and more/safer cycle lanes. Solutions need to be found within Reading and no doubt could be found.

I live in Emmer Green - and the reason it's a pleasant place to stay is that there is so much unspoilt countryside north of Reading. Adding an orbital road is a poor idea from the 70s and 80s and is the best encouragement for urban sprawl. The days when we can just build more roads to accommodate more traffic should be over - and there should be a realisation that adding more capacity just encourages more cars. I sincerely hope that this doesn't happen.
