Speed limit signage
Hi all. Any idea who I should contact about requesting/suggesting speed limit signage on the newly resurfaced stretch of road outside Thames Farm? It seems to me that traffic is moving faster than it used to, and that cars are still going faster than 30mph when they reach the junction with Station Road, where schoolchildren cross (both the main road and Station Road) for school buses in the mornings.

I’m afraid not Victoria. David Bartholomew gave the PC the same response. We have asked OCC to ensure that Taylor Woodrow reinstate our flashing 30 sign as soon as possible. We have also commissioned a survey to record drivers’ speeds on that section of the A4155. If the survey shows speeding, which based on anecdotal evidence we think is likely, we will consider what further action - whether signs or something else - we may need to take to keep residents safe. I’d welcome views.

An unsatisfactory reply to my report on FixMyStreet: "Dear Victoria, As stated in the Highway Code, the speed limit is automatically 30mph within a built up area, which are identified by the presence of street lighting. As street lighting is provided along this section of the A4155 in the location of the new junction, 30mph repeater signage is not permitted. Kind regards Road Agreements" I hope more progress made with the County Councillor, Fred?

It was inevitable that as soon as the A4155 was widened and a perfect surface was laid that traffic would speed up thus making the most dangerous junction in Shiplake even more risky. The only alternatives will not be welcomed. Speed cushions, speed tables, yellow lines across the road as with roundabout warnings, cameras or a 20 mph limit for the area in question. Driving out of Woodlands Road to turn right or down Station Road is already Russian Roulette. Signs seem to be ignored.

The signage also needs to be much clearer approaching the junction with Memorial Avenue (travelling towards Reading) - where the limit goes from 40 - 30. It is currently hard to see and traffic is often travelling much too quickly as they approach the junction, making it very hard to cross the road with children or dogs. Ideally a crossing would be provided. As an aside, with a safe walking route, money could be saved on school buses.

Hi Victoria Thanks for this. I’ll raise it with our County Councillor at next week’s parish council meeting.
