The Plowden Arms

Morning all.

Word reached me yesterday that The Plowden Arms (a chunk of the plot at least) has been sold STC. It was offered through the Fleurets website for the sum of £450,000 plus VAT. The garden and part of the car park is not included in this sale.

I'd be interested in the village views of this. I knew the current tenants were leaving in April, and assumed it would be taken over by another tenant.

I'm concerned that the pub may be re-developed and lost forever.

Thanks for highlighting this Mark - really important we try everything to retain the local pub...... I know DP is kindly investigating with the Parish Council - I'm happy to volunteer to be involved in building a plan/campaign. Anyone else?

PS - Disappointing to read the comment posted at 11.40 on the 23rd - Shiplake VillageS include both Lower and Shiplake Cross, with the Plowden being a vital community asset. Typical NIMBY response I fear...

Just checked Fleurets website. Photo banners says " SOLD STC ". Is that what I think it means ?

Demolishing the function room and not rebuilding seemed to make little sense until now! How lovely it would be to get back the traditional country pub back where locals were welcome.

it would be a shame if the village were to lose another part of its infrastructure so we will have to watch this space carefully.

Living in Badgers Walk I have to say that I believe the location better suits housing than a pub.

There's an L shaped plot that would allow a separate access from Plough Lane which would be of interest to developers. Would a new tenant/owner have a viable business with some of the car park and all of the garden gone? It may explain why the function room was taken down last year. That would have cut in to the other plot.

What concerns me and I'm not sure about is this....is it possible to divide up chunks of land and sell on without anyone knowing about it?

That's certainly disturbing to me. we only live 50 yards away and are still mourning the loss of what used to be a nice pub that was converted to a restaurant that seemed to pride itself on neglecting the locals. We were looking forward to some new blood with the next tenants. It will be a sad day if it is lost to developers. Curious though that the garden / carpark isn't part of that sale. I wonder if its up for sale separately as anther plot (or plots!) but hasn't had any takers yet.
